When I became pregnant with my youngest son, I decided to stay at home to raise him. The cost of childcare and commute to work was unreasonable. It made more sense for me to stay home. Initially, it felt like a much-needed break. The hustle and bustle of work life was becoming overwhelming. What I failed to realize is how much of my identity was wrapped into my job.
Being a stay at home mom can be very difficult. Most people do not perceive your position as a respectable one. I find myself rolling my eyes every time someone asks my husband when I am going to get a “real” job.
In reality, being a stay at home mom is the most challenging job I have ever done. It is very easy for me to forget my purpose in this life and to feel like I am not accomplishing the things that I want to accomplish. These are some things that I do to assist me in finding purpose as a stay at home mom.
1. Finding Joy in Staying Home
The ability to stay at home and watch my children grow up is a blessing. Every time I see them learn something new, it brings great pride in my life. It can be easy to see my children as a burden. I have learned to get out of that frame of thought and enjoy these moments that I have with them because they will not last forever. I allow myself some time to get down on their level and enjoy the simplicity of playing with them,
2. Connect with Other Moms
I love my mom friends. They can relate to me like no one else can. Discussing the mundane occurrences of my day is sure to bore my husband. Contrarily, my mom friends just get it. They act as a sounding board for your frustrations and a chance to laugh at those silly things that our children do. Find a group of good mom friends and it will make things a lot easier.
3. Take Care of Yourself
It can be easy to let yourself go as a stay at home mom. Most days I am covered in baby vomit and other things that I will not name. However, taking the time to properly groom myself makes me feel so much better about my day. I am sure my husband appreciates it as well.
4. Set Goals for the Day
Each day that you wake up, make a to-do list. Set purposeful and measurable goals to attain for that day. Accomplishing these tasks will undoubtedly increase your confidence and sense of purpose.
5. Get a Side Hustle
The online world provides endless opportunities to work from home and earn money. Whether you are an artist or avid shopper, there is a place for you in the side hustle scene. Personally, I love to shop. I have been told that I have a good eye for clothes. I decided to resell clothes on eBay. It gives you extra cash to help out around the house and a great sense of independence. Most importantly, it is fun!
6. Always Continue to Learn
There are so many resources out there to learn about new topics and hobbies you want to try. I use sites like Skillshare and Udemy to help develop new skills. I am interested in design, so I decided to take up some graphic design classes. You may not always be a stay at home mom. Keeping up on the latest skills will help you stay marketable if you decide to return to the workforce.
7. Stop Comparing Yourself.
We all know a mom that always seems like she has it together. Trust me, she does not! We all have our own quirks and imperfections. Stop being so hard on yourself and play on your own strengths.
